Base Aérea de Canoas (BACN) can trace its origins back to 1937 when the 3rd Army Aviation Regiment (3º RAv) was transferred from Base Aérea de Santa Maria.
With the creation of the Air Force Ministry in 1941, 3º RAv became known as Base Aérea de Gravataí. In 1944 3º RAv was disbanded and the name was changed to Base Aérea de Canoas.

The following Força Aérea Brasileira squadrons are based at Canoas and constitute Ala 3 (which reports to the Planalto Air Command (VI COMAR)):
– 2 Esquadrão /7 Grupo de Aviação
– 1 Esquadrão /14 Grupo de Aviação
– 5 Esquadrão de Transporte Aéreo

2° Esquadrão 7° Grupo de Aviação (2/7° GAv)
“Phoenix”
2/7 GAv was formed in 1982 at Base Aérea de Florianópolis, Santa Catarina to operate the Embraer EMB111A Bandeirulha (P-95A/B/BM). The P-95 has undergone two major update programmes, the first to provide structural strengthening and updated avionics to B standard and the second to provide further structural strengthening and a glass cockpit to BM standard.

Base Aérea de Florianópolis was decommissioned as a base in 2014 and the squadron relocated to Base Aérea de Canoas.

1° Esquadrão 14° Grupo de Aviação (1/14° GAv)
“Pampa”
1/14 GAv was formed in 1947 at Base Aérea de Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, when the 3° Grupo de Caça (3º GpCa) with Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was disbanded. In 1954 the unit was re-equipped with six Gloster Meteor F8 and two TF-7, which were withdrawn from use in 1966 and replaced with Lockheed T-33A T-Bird (TF-33A). From 1974 all Lockheed T-33 of the FAB were operated by this unit, but only until 1975, when the unit reequipped with the Northrop F-5E/F Tiger II.

A major upgrade programme for the F-5 started in 2005 and was completed in 2020. 37 F-5E and 2 F-5F were updated to M standard which featured improved radar, avionics and weapons systems. The new glass cockpit is compatible with night-vision goggles (NVGs) and the pilot is also provided with an Elbit/AEL Targo helmet-mounted display, allowing off-boresight target designation.

New self-protection systems include chaff/flare launchers, a new radar warning receiver, and wiring for the use of Rafael’s Sky Shield electronic warfare pod. The airframes were also enhanced to add another 15 years of service life.

5 Esquadrão de Transporte Aéreo (5 ETA)
“Pégaso”
The unit was formed in 1969 at Base Aérea de Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, as part of V Zona Aérea and from 1973 as part of V Comando Aéreo Regional (V COMAR).

5 ETA has operated Beech TC-45T from 1969 to 1975, Douglas C-47 Dakota from 1969 to 1977, Embraer EMB110 Bandeirante (C-95) from 1975, Embraer EMB120 Brasilia (C-97) from 2008, Cessna C208A Caravan (C-98) from 2010 & the upgraded C-95M from 2012.
